Spotify’s AI Persona badges are gradually rolling out, according to the platform’s current artist-support guidance. Announced in August, the labels address an artist’s public identity: a photorealistic AI-generated person presented as the artist. They do not automatically apply to a real person who uses AI tools in music production. [1, 2]
Spotify’s support page describes two versions: AI Persona for self-disclosed profiles and Likely AI Persona for profiles identified through Spotify’s review. It also says music from AI Personas is excluded from editorial or personalized recommendations unless a listener intentionally engages with the artist, such as by following them. Artists can appeal a Spotify-applied label. [2]
That makes the label more consequential than a note in a biography. Under the stated policy, identity affects how a project can reach listeners through recommendations. At the same time, the badge should not be read as a complete account of how a recording was made. Spotify treats AI credits, which describe AI involvement in music creation, as a separate feature. [2]
Le Cadre’s view is that this distinction deserves careful coverage. Arguments about AI music often combine several questions: whether software helped make a track, whether a voice was simulated, and whether the person presented to listeners exists. A single verdict on “AI” can leave an audience less informed about the actual project.
Consider the listener who likes a song and then looks for the artist behind it. The profile helps frame what they think they are supporting. A fabricated human identity can create expectations about lived experience, performance, and authorship that the project may not fulfill. Disclosure gives that listener a better basis for deciding how to engage.
The platform’s policy does not settle every question about authenticity, and the rollout is still gradual. It does provide a clearer reason to read a badge carefully before drawing conclusions about a track. For creators, the useful next step is to understand the identity their profile presents and consult Spotify’s guidance directly. For listeners, it is to distinguish information about the performer from information about the production.
